Electrical safety inspections and testing
Peace of mind before you buy, before the insulation goes in, or just because it’s been a long time since anyone looked.
Most electrical problems announce themselves long before they become dangerous — a warm switch plate, a breaker that trips occasionally, a smoke alarm nobody has tested since it was installed. An inspection is a couple of hours that tells you exactly where you stand.
I’ll test the protective devices, check the switchboard and visible wiring, test the smoke alarms, and give you a plain-English list of what’s fine, what should be watched and what needs doing now — in that order.
What that usually involves
- Full home electrical safety assessments
- Testing safety switches (RCDs), circuit breakers and other protective devices
- Smoke detector testing and replacement
- Pre-insulation electrical safety checks
- Certificate of electrical safety
- Test and tag for appliances and leads
“Tom from Reflex Electrical was excellent. He came out straight away and fixed and replaced my lights with no hassle at all. Super friendly, professional, and very knowledgeable. Explained everything clearly and did a great job. Highly recommend!”

About safety inspections
How often should safety switches be tested?
Press the test button on each RCD every three months — it takes a minute and it’s the only way to know they still trip. A full test with instruments, which measures how fast they actually operate, is worth doing periodically.
Do I need an inspection before buying a house?
It’s not compulsory, but it’s cheap insurance on an older home. Knowing the board needs replacing before you sign is worth a great deal more than finding out afterwards.
What is a pre-insulation check?
Before insulation is installed or topped up, the wiring and fittings in the roof space are checked so nothing unsafe gets buried under it — particularly downlights that aren’t rated to be covered.
How long does a safety inspection take?
For a typical home, a couple of hours. You’ll get a plain-English list at the end of what’s fine, what’s worth watching and what needs doing now — in that order.
Do you test and tag?
Yes, for appliances and leads. Tell me roughly how many items you have and I’ll give you a price.
When was your switchboard last checked?
Call and you’ll get me directly. Or send the details through and I’ll come back to you.
