LED lighting is one of the few upgrades that pays for itself. It uses a fraction of the electricity of traditional lighting, the fittings last significantly longer so you’re not back up a ladder every year, and they run cooler — which matters more than most people realise in a roof space.

The downlight point worth knowing: IC-4 rated LED downlights are designed to be safely covered by ceiling insulation. Traditional downlights need the insulation cut back around each fitting to stop them overheating, which leaves gaps in the ceiling insulation and lets heat straight out. In a Canberra winter that’s money going through your roof. Swapping to IC-4 rated fittings lets the insulation run continuously.

What that usually involves

  • Replacing old halogen downlights with IC-4 rated LEDs
  • Whole-home lighting upgrades
  • Indoor and outdoor lighting, including security and landscape lighting
  • Replacing light fittings, lamps and transformers
  • Under-cabinet and strip lighting
  • Smart switches, smart lights and automation

“Tom did an excellent job installing new kitchen lighting and related wiring work. A good communicator and skilled tradesman at a good price.”

Common questions

About lighting upgrades

What does IC-4 rated mean?

It’s a fire safety rating meaning the fitting can be fully covered by ceiling insulation. It lets your insulation run continuously instead of being cut back around each light, which is better for both fire safety and heating costs.

Can you just swap my existing downlights?

In most cases yes, and it’s a straightforward job. Sometimes the existing cutouts are a different size, in which case there are fittings that cover the gap.

Will LEDs work with my dimmers?

Not always — older dimmers were built for halogen loads and can flicker or buzz with LEDs. If you want dimming, I’ll fit dimmers matched to the new fittings.

Do you supply the fittings, or do I?

Either. Plenty of people buy their own downlights and I fit them; others would rather I supply everything. Tell me which you’d prefer when I quote and I’ll price it that way.

Can you change the colour of the light?

Yes. Warm white suits living areas and bedrooms; cooler white suits kitchens, laundries and workspaces. Many fittings are switchable, so we can set it once you see it in the room.

Still running halogen downlights?

Call and you’ll get me directly. Or send the details through and I’ll come back to you.
