Emergency electrician in Canberra — fault finding, day or night
Tripping safety switches, unexplained power loss, a burning smell you can’t place. Call and you’ll get me, and we’ll work out what’s going on.
Fault finding is the part of this trade I like most, and it’s the part most people get charged for twice — once for a guess, and again for the actual fix.
I use up-to-date testing equipment and a methodical approach to locate the source of the problem, whether that’s faulty wiring, an overloaded circuit or a failing appliance. Once I’ve found it, I’ll explain your options in plain English and carry out a lasting repair — not a patch that has you ringing again in a fortnight.
What that usually involves
- Tripping safety switches or circuit breakers
- Power outages, or partial power loss to part of the house
- Faulty outlets, switches or light fittings
- Burning smells, buzzing or crackling sounds
- Overloaded or outdated circuits
- Intermittent faults that come and go — the hard ones
“I recommend Tom without reservation. I called him to remedy an intermittent fault in a damaged buried power line. Investigating and repairing the line entailed multiple visits, which he undertook cheerfully. His work was meticulous and his charges were modest.”

About emergency call-outs
What should I do before you arrive?
If something smells hot or looks damaged, switch that circuit off at the switchboard and leave it off. If the safety switch has tripped and won’t reset, leave it — it’s doing its job, and forcing it back on hides the fault.
Do you come out after hours?
Emergency call-outs are why the phone is on. Ring and tell me what’s happening and I’ll tell you honestly whether it needs me tonight or whether it can safely wait until morning.
Why does my safety switch keep tripping?
Usually a genuine fault somewhere on that circuit — often moisture, a failing appliance or damaged cable. It’s a protective device doing what it’s designed to do. Finding which of those it is takes testing, not guessing.
What does a call-out cost?
I’ll tell you on the phone what I charge before I come out, and you’ll get a price for the work before I start it. No surprises at the end — that’s the part people remember.
Will you be able to fix it the same visit?
Most of the time, yes. Some faults — a damaged underground cable, for instance — take more than one visit to trace and repair properly. I’ll tell you which one you’re looking at as soon as I know.
Something not right with the power?
Call and you’ll get me directly. Or send the details through and I’ll come back to you.
